Once you have scheduled your engagement session, it’s time to think about your outfits! This can be fun but also, if you’re like me, stressful. Choosing clothes for myself and accomplishing being comfortable and looking good is hard enough; then you throw in a second party and all of a sudden you have to think about coordinating. Here are some tips of what to wear for your engagement photos as well as some examples of our incredibly stylish couples.
“Should we match or stay away from certain patterns or colors?”
You don’t want to match but coordinate. What’s the difference? Well, you know those family photos where everyone is in jeans and white shirts? That’s matching, and you don’t want to be those people. Instead you want to pick a color family and both coordinate to that. If you want to be more subtle, choose one color palette, for instance neutrals, or warm colors and try to each find a piece in that family.
“Should we avoid bright colors?”
Absolutely not. We love color! And we love when people mix and match patterns too. We want you to dress for your personalities first, and then for the scene we are shooting in.
“Should we dress up?”
If you want to! Again, does that fit your personality? If you’re a jeans and tank top kind of person, don’t feel pressured to be dressy just because this is a special session. You can totally still get your hair and makeup done and throw on a pair of jeans and flip flops. Just as I like to ask couples what they would do on a date, think about what you would wear on a date. If you’d get decked out and then go to a fancy dinner than definitely embrace that. We often have time for an outfit change during the session, so feel free to bring both a dressier and more relaxed option.
“Any colors or styles I should avoid altogether?”
You know best what you look good in. Dress to your comfort level. Wear something that you know fits you perfectly. Now is the time to break out an old favorite, or even something that has meaning- like what you wore on your first date. That doesn’t mean you can’t go shopping just for your session, but wear your outfit at least once before being photographed in it. That way you’ll know if it’s too tight or itchy or you don’t like the way you look in it. Everyone is different. The only thing I would avoid is matching your surroundings too well. For instance, if we are shooting in a park you shouldn’t wear a ton of green to the point that you would blend in too well.
“Any other tips?”
Accessorize! Layers and accessories look great and are easy ways to add more color or texture.
Have your hair and makeup done for the extra confidence. It’s a great time to do your trial run before the wedding!
Oh and props?! Only bring them if they make sense to an activity we are shooting you doing. If you don;t actually have picnics all the time, don’t bring a picnic set up. But if you love wine and got engaged at a winery- heck yes you should bring some wine from that vineyard like Kirstin & Evan did below :) Or you could bring a sign for your Save The Date image.
Make sure your undergarments are appropriate for your outfit. So if you are rocking a tank top, make sure you wear a bra that we can’t see the straps.
Don’t overthink it. In the end this is all about having fun together, and it doesn’t have to be fancy or complicated. All you have to do is be in love and Evan and I will do the rest :)
